Anonymous asked: What advice would you give for ppl looking to start a blog? Any tips on how to gather a decent following (via tumblr and/or twitter)?
First, I think you need to decide what type of blog you want to have. When people ask me what my blog is about, I say “bullshit,” because honestly, what is it about? Nothing. I think it’s way harder to have a blog actually about something.
I started this blog like three years ago and it used to be called “In My Purse Somewhere” because I always carry these massive purses with pretty much everything I need inside…I don’t know, I thought it was cool. But then a Puerto Rican lady in a van called me a “white bitch” once and I told everyone and then people started calling me “white bitch” and I just thought it was the funniest thing in the world so I changed the name of my blog. Then I bought the domain because I’m part of Generation Me and we do things like that. (That book is a fascinating read and I have it if you want to borrow it.)
While the names have changed and I have changed over the past few years, my goal with blogging in general was always to just have a lighthearted, funny outlet for some of my observations about life. I like to think I’ve been pretty consistent.
And given the nature of Tumblr, it’s become a lot more than a blog. (LOL.) I’ve, like, met people IRL from Tumblr and everyone’s been really cool. I love the community aspect of it. I have a real writing job which is very, very different from this blog, but I think having my own blog is a great way to keep the wheel greased/experiment with writing styles/be able to use swear words.
I guess just write about what you want? No matter what you write about, people are going to hate you. People loooooove hating. Once more people start reading your stuff, you’re going to get more and more people telling you how stupid you are. On the same token, you’re going to get more and more people going out of their way to write you an email saying they spent all day at work on your blog. B-) Everything in moderation.
The only other “tip” I have is to post pictures of yourself. Maybe that sounds weird but it’s 2010, young people have zero attention spans, and I think everyone likes to see who’s blog their visiting all the time. Adds personality. I know what all my favorite bloggers look like. (See also: Generation Me.)
In sum:
- Write about nothing or something.
- Show us your pix.
- Have Sade reblog you.
Honestly, IDK. tl;dr
