I would just like to take some time to talk about some behavior I’ve been partaking in that I’m not terribly proud of. It started last week when I was walking home late and I gave Monica a call to talk about some kual stuff that went down at work that day. I dialed her up on my iPhone like a regular human but Monica said she was having trouble hearing me. I said, “Give me a second, I’m going to plug these weird headphones in.”
I recently purchased these Sony EX Earbuds with Smartphone Remote. They were cheaper than the regular headphones and the microphone doubles as a remote for your music. I knew there was no way in hell I’d ever be using that microphone. “No Bluetooth, No hands-free device, no problem” — that’s my motto.
But I needed Monica to hear me clearly so I plugged these things in and gave it a whirl. “Is this better?” I asked. It was. I continued on my way home, talking to the air, and made it all the way to my bodega, where I finished my story outside, still speaking outloud to a piece of plastic hanging near my face on a wire. I was holding no bags. :(

Me, kinda.
The incident passed and I didn’t think much of it. “You got caught up in the story,” I told myself. “Cell phones too close to your brain give you cancer,” I reasoned.
But this morning, there was no excuse. I needed to call the gym to secure myself a spot in spin class tonight. I paused my music, dialed the gym’s number, and didn’t even take the headphones out.
Am I that person now? Do I talk on cell phones “hands free”? Only time will tell. Sorry to the entire population.
